Component 3: Magazines
Masthead (the title of a newspaper or magazine at the head of the first or editorial page)
- 'Vibe' is an American music and entertainment magazine. The publication predominantly features R&B and Hip Hop music artists, actors and other entertainers.
- The magazines title, ‘Vibe’, is in bold white letters taking up the space on the top of the magazine this could perhaps be because the magazine wasn't as well known in 2009 and therefore needed to be advertised more than the image of the celebrity.
- The font and size is clear to the reader making it stand out and perhaps easily recognisable to the audience/reader.
Taglines (a catchphrase or slogan, especially used in advertising)
- 'What's love got to do with it'
Image (a representation of the external form of a person of thing)
Cover lines (tell us the stories that are in the magazine)
- The main image is a close-up shot of Rihanna including only her neck and face.
- The image takes up a lot of space on the magazine however, written text is covering the top of her forehead and shoulders, making the main attraction her face which is recognisable to a wide target audience
- While her make-up is simple, drawing attention mainly to her eyes, items of clothing cannot be seen in this head shot, perhaps drawing further attention to her face as the only pieces of jewellery that can be seen is her earrings.
- The colours are black and white with a blue background giving the magazine quite an unusual and perhaps unique look.
- Colour scheme mostly of blue and black which keeps the magazine consistent and simple
- The grey and black image is highlighted with the blue background making the magazine stand out and attract the buyers attention
Barcode (a machine-readable code in the form of numbers and a pattern of parallel lines, used especially for stock control)
- Is at the front of the magazine perhaps unusual
- Used to buy the magazine
Masthead (the title of a newspaper or magazine at the head of the first or editorial page)
- 'Billboard' is an American entertainment media brand. It publishes pieces involving news, video, opinion, reviews, events and style, and is also known for its music chart, including the Hot 100 and Billboard 200, tracking the most popular songs and albums in different genres.
- Billboards unique title makes the magazine stand out and is easily recognisable by its audience
- The magazine is also well known by a wide target audience this is evident through the fact that the title 'Billboard' isn't fully visible to the audience this perhaps is because the magazine is already well known and sells itself.
- This makes the magazine open to a wider target audience
- It also gives the audience an idea of what can be found in the magazine before they buy it
- The main image is a medium shot of Beyonce showing most of her body. She has her hands on her hips which perhaps presents her as confident and powerful female figure
- She is placed in front of the masthead this could suggest that she is what is selling this magazine
- Her dress is simple matching the layout of the magazine nothing is too bold or stands out however, the magazine is still good enough for it to sell copies
- She is wearing simple make-up and her hair is pulled out of her face
- Beyonce's dress is white matching the colour of the masthead, linking her with the magazine
