How is the record label reflected in the product?
How is the audience targeted?

Beyonce - Halo
'Halo' is a song recorded by American singer Beyonce. The music video was intended to give a behind the scenes glimpse of Beyonce's life, stripped of her make-up and celebrity trappings. 'Halo' is a pop power ballad, the lyrics of which describe a sublime love. It features drum, piano, keyboard, string, and percussion instrumentation.

Andrew Goodwin's theory suggests that music videos should demonstrate genre characteristics

The first shot fades in from black with a close-up of the artists face. A bright light shines in from the window, a motif throughout, making her appear angelic

The start of the music video opens with a close-up, wide angle shot of Beyonce, portraying her with an innocent look with simple/no make-up, this reflects the meaning of her song.

The opening establishing shot gives the audience a sense of location and type of environment that she is surrounded by, as an audience we could perhaps unpick what might happen in the rest of the music video. It also gives us a clear narrative of the genre

However, the background of the shot is blurred keeping the main focus on the artist (Beyonce)

This opening scene also gives the audience an unclear image of the grey and white background. The use of a white and extensive use of lighting perhaps highlights an idea of Beyonce's innocence or pure which she tried to portray in her music video.

High key-lighting reduces the lighting ratio present in the scene, perhaps used to create an upbeat mood.

The artist is positioned to the side of the camera at eye level highlighting the fact that she is perhaps  not meant to be the focus  - could suggest that her mind is somewhere else perhaps where she is looking at.
- She is not looking directly at the camera and this makes the audience feel less involved.

Beyonce is represented with her hair tied up out of her face presenting her in a non-stereotypical way, in the way that she is not glamoured with excessive use of make-up

This is a recurring shot that is used often in this music video of Beyonce standing watching over her pattern

The music video is shot mainly in grey and white, which could convey to the audience that she is quite mysterious and that a lot of herself is kept in the dark. It also has connotations of sadness and depression, feelings that she has perhaps experienced herself.

This extreme close-up shot frames the subjects very closely emphasising the characters facial expressions - gives the audience clearer idea of how both character's feel. This shot is also quite intimate as they are both very close to each other - again reflecting the meaning of her song

High key lighting - the lighting only highlights half of her face while the other half is left in shadow
perhaps presenting her purity, and making her the main focus, which is also evident through the fact that she is the centered in this camera shot.

There are other extreme close-up shots of the pair holding hands, and many shots throughout showing them as intimate with each other.

The next scene has an establishing shot presenting the change of location and while the lighting is not as bright in this scene, light is still shinning brightly around Beyonce. This could suggest that she is always the center of attention perhaps even when she doesn't want to be.

Costume - The use of the black outfit could imply that she is trying to disappear or is trying not to draw so much attention to herself.
The outfit is not presenting her in a inappropriate way

The male character in this scene is extremely close to the camera, positioned to the side looking down on Beyonce, build suspense for the audience

The high angle shot presents the male pattern as more dominant and powerful as Beyonce dances below.

The lyrics of the song 'surrounded by your embrace' perhaps reflects the love that she experienced from her partner.

The lyrics of this song deals with a woman who has had problems with her previous relationships, and she explains that she has trouble trusting men. However, she meets someone who changes her views on love and trust.

This final extreme close-up scene can be seen to be very intimate, it could perhaps make the audience feel as if they are intruding. The focus is on Beyonce and her partner and the lighting is again mainly focused on her while the background is blurred.

The song has a slow beat and it progresses from soft to loud.

The narrative of Beyonce's Halo music video was intended to give a behind the scene glimpse of her life, without make-up and celebrity life. The narrative also shows a sublime love between Beyonce and the male lead Michael Ealy. It has links with the song, as each time 'Halo' is mentioned it shows bright lighting around the male lead as well as close ups of both of them

Target audience is for people in their 30s who are perhaps experiencing love and relationships. She is also a mainstream singer and perhaps has a wide target audience anyway.

Celine Dion - The power of love
Rush's original version, released in her native United States at the end of 1984 and in Europe during 1985, went to number one in the United Kingdom in October 1985 and became the biggest-selling single of the year in that country

The music videos opens with an extreme close-up shot of Celine Dion focusing on her eyes. This perhaps creates mystery for the audience as information about her surroundings is unavailable, creating suspense and perhaps drawing attention that will become significant later in the narrative.

She is presented with simple make-up

Throughout the music video is changes from black and white to colour which could possible suggest her past and present.

In the first scene the slow cuts that change from the extreme close-ups of the eyes to the mouth which are in different colours.

A tilt shot is used as the camera moves vertically up and down her face, this could imply mystery as we are introduced to the main character.

The camera is directly in-line with her and she is staring into the camera perhaps this creates a connection with the audience.

As an audience we get a wider shot and begin to see the background and surroundings. Her clothes are white a furry perhaps it could connote that she is innocent

Throughout the whole music video edits and extreme close-ups have been used this perhaps suggests to the audience that

The whole music video is shot in black and white this creates suspense for the audience

Opening shot is of the reflection of a teenager laying in bed. This close-up shot creates suspense and mystery for the audience. The lighting is only focused on the child, while the rest of the background is in darkness, this may also create suspense.
- most of the music video is in black and white

Low-key lighting. Everything is dark except for his face this could imply that it is going to be significant. The close-up shot allows the audience to build a connection with the character, also get to see the characters emotions.

Establishing shot allows the audience to see the setting and location, perhaps giving the audience a clearer understanding of the plot. The lighting is mainly focused on the teenager in the middle perhaps emphasising that he is the main character in this music video.
